According to business practice firm EY over 60% of software used by Indian companies posed a threat of cyber attacks.

More than 50,300 cyber security incidents such as defacements, phishing, virus and website intrusions were observed in India during 2016, according to data from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-in).

The EY survey showed that 26% of employees confessed to installing outside software on work computers, and 49% of CIOs identified malware security threats posed by illegal software.

“Many organisations secure their hardware. However, they do not pay attention to the software used, which could be unregulated,” said Advisory Service Practice at EY, Maya Ramachandran.

“Several large corporations and multinational companies have started setting up software asset management offices that would look into the leading best practices of using software including compliance and licensing terms to software vendors,” she added.

Further noting that middle market companies may ignore peripheral matters including cyber security, and are more worried about running the business.

Addressing issues like the use of unauthorised connection of personal devices to corporate networks and the use of older software versions.
