To cut costs and improve efficiency, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has revealed that it’s planning to start using robotics to help construct ships which extend 400 meters in length.

The South Korean shipbuilder is currently working on a robotic system which has a high-frequency inductive heating system, a multi-joint arm based on automation technologies and IoT to automatically share a vessel 3-D curved surface.

The system is designed to improve the quality of the end product and productivity by three times when compared to manmade work.

As a result of using artificial intelligence, the company hopes to save $US9.4billion per year.

Hyundai Heavy also plans to build an automated plant for employing robotic arms to supply steel parts to its two affiliated shipbuilding units, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries; as well as use other robots for welding and paint jobs.
