Two thirds of UK businesses have been hit by cyber attacks

According to recent government research, two thirds of large UK businesses have been hit by cyber attacks in the past year, and nearly seven out of ten of these attacks involved viruses, spyware or malware.

The cyber attacks

Britain’s large businesses are being urged to take action against cyber attacks, and are being asked to implement anti-cyber attack strategies by the government due to the results of its research. The research revealed that in some cases, cyber attacks cost businesses millions, and as one in four large firms experience at least one cyber attack a month, it’s shocking to discover that only half of all firms have taken government recommended actions to identify and address the vulnerabilities of the business. Only a third of all firms had formal written cyber security policies, the research showed, and only 10% had an incident management plan in place.

The government is taking action

Investing a record £1.9 billion, the government is taking action to protect the UK and its businesses against future attacks and a brand new Cyber Security Centre will launch this autumn.

The government suggests all business adopt their Cyber Essentials scheme in order to help themselves fight against future cyber attacks.

Ed Valzey, the Minister for the Digital Economy said, “The UK is a world-leading digital economy and this government has made cybersecurity a top priority. Too many firms are losing money, data and consumer confidence with the vast number of cyber attacks. It’s absolutely crucial businesses are secure and can protect data. As a minimum companies should take action by adopting the Cyber Essential scheme which will help them protect themselves.”
