US cybersecurity company victim of a state-sponsored attack

The US cybersecurity company FireEye was recently the victim of a sophisticated threat actor, which is believed to be state-sponsored. It was reported that some of the company tools for testing customers’ security had been stolen in the process. The hackers were after information about government customers.

We don’t know who organized the attack yet.

The company share price dropped after its acknowledgment of the hack. It declared that this attack was orchestrated by a nation with top-tier offensive capabilities, as it was widely different from the usual incidents they witnessed over the years. The company stated that the hackers were targeting them specifically and used a combination of new and sophisticated techniques.

It would appear that the Russians could be responsible for the attack, although there are no further proofs at the moment.

The company is used all around the world to protect organizations and the government against hacking. So, when it is attacked in turn, it is quite scary for all cybersecurity experts and professionals. Moreover, the company’s hacking weapons and tools were stolen, making it even more frightening.

This situation happened in the past where hackers stole and shared cyberweapons created by the US National Security Agency, resulting in successful and damaging attacks on businesses and civilians all around the world.

FireEye is aware of which weapons were stolen so it can hopefully know how to defend against them. Only time will tell.
