The latest version of Apple’s mobile iOS operating system has been exposed to hackers as the company accidentally unpatched a previously patched up flaw.

Before the system was updated, hackers managed to gain access to the older software, iOS 12.3. But, when the flaw was discovered, workers at Apple quickly patched up the problem.

However, this bug has been reintroduced into the latest version of the software, iOS 12.4.

Vice reports that those investigating the problem say that this has made it easy to both hack iPhone users as well as making it easy to jailbreak up to date iPhones.

Sharing the jailbreak

Taking advantage of the flaw, hackers quickly released a jailbreak for the most recent iPhone, making it the first publicly free jailbreak for modernized iPhones in years.

Jonathan Levin, a security researcher and trainer who specializes in iOS, spoke of how the vulnerability can be exploited using code that was found over 100 days ago. He says, “Due to 12.4 being the latest version of iOS currently available and the only one which Apple allows upgrading to, for the next couple of days (till 12.4.1 comes out), all devices of this version (or any 11.x and 12.x below 12.3) are jail breakable—which means they are also vulnerable to what is effectively a 100+ day exploit,”

Twitter users are already saying that because of the hackers releasing the jailbreak for the iOS 12.4, they have already taken advantage of the situation.

One million dollars

This news comes after Apple recently offered $1 Million to anybody who could hack the latest version of the iPhone. This is because if an iPhone has had a jailbreak done to it, then it can be sold on for hundreds of dollars. Therefore, Apple explained that they would rather work with the hackers, than against them.

Security experts are warning that if people choose to jailbreak their iPhones, they should be careful of hackers.
