Australia to use facial recognition tech to keep count of koalas

It was recently announced that the South Australian government is using facial recognition technology in order to keep count of koalas.

Indeed, the government has partnered with Flinders University and conservation charity Koala Life to put this initiative in place. By using drones, they will be using non-invasive monitoring techniques to count, identify and study koalas at Kangaroo Island and the Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges. This aims to understand their movements, behaviors, physiology, as well as assess if they are experiencing stress.

Moreover, by observing them through facial recognition tech, they will be able to ensure their safety, especially after the recent fires that have ravaged the country. This will also help reduce impacts that affect their survival. Hence, these AI-enabled drones provide a more accurate, reliable, and safe way to monitor koalas.

The government is then planning to eventually expand to other community groups across the country.
