China to increase automation to face labor shortage

According to CNBC, it would seem that China is looking to increase automation in order to counter labor shortages.

Indeed, the past few years have witnessed the growing importance of automating jobs all around China. With its aging population and rising wages, using machines to help automate repetitive tasks in factories and warehouses might change work considerably.

Automation could then be a solution to these challenges as well as help China’s overall economy. With digitization, it is bound to increase the productivity and efficiency of the workforce.

Moreover, it was reported that China is pushing for automation in more sectors such as the automotive industry where driverless cars using artificial intelligence (AI) are emerging. Indeed, the city of Guangzhou has then become a major testing hub for autonomous vehicles.

However, automation could also lead to many job losses. McKinsey stated that between 2018 and 2030, up to 30% of the workforce may need to switch occupations.
