A networking vulnerability similar to WannaCry has infected tens of thousands of computers worldwide since Wednesday.

According to Rapid7, the majority of computers affected run a free networking software called Samba, which was originally developed for Linux and Unix computers.

“The vulnerability could potentially be used to create a worm, like the one which allowed WannaCry to spread so quickly,” said Threat Intelligence Leader at Rapid7, Rebekah Brown.

“Most of the computers found are running older versions of the software and cannot be patched,” she added.

The US Department of Homeland Security strongly advises users and administrators to try and apply a patch to control affected computers.
