Ontario police to have been hit by a ransomware attack

It was recently reported that a Northern Ontario police has been hit by a ransomware attack last week.

Indeed, Sault Ste. Marie Ontario police stated that the attack happened around August 26th and affected some of its services, such as its email service. However, its 911 service and online reporting system for less urgent crimes were not impacted. Thus, the force was able to keep answering urgent calls.

It wasn’t reported if its police dispatch or records systems were affected or not. The information technology staff is currently working through the attack to regain access to the affected systems.

Government departments and services are becoming more and more targeted by cyber attackers as they provide critical infrastructure services and are more likely to pay a ransom.
