Researchers to use AI to make city streets safer

Researchers at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Spain have recently developed a new algorithm by applying artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to identify common patterns in road traffic accidents. With this new technology, they could help guide urban planners in order to reduce collisions and make the streets safer.

Indeed, with an increasing number of deaths being on the road, it is essential to put a stop to road accidents and work towards a safer environment. The researchers have then started to deploy AI to analyze hours of video footage and thousands of photographs of life in the biggest cities of Spain.

In order to do so, the scientists combined machine learning and artificial neural networks to find common patterns in urban areas that have the most road accidents. It was found out that most accidents happen on city streets that were cluttered with features that distract drivers.

Hence, the researchers think that there is a way to make streets safer by combining their AI insights with the expertise of architects, engineers, transport authorities, and city planners. By working together, this could be achieved,
