Trump’s new social network to be breaking the rules of the software license

The Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) has recently reported that former President Donald Trump’s new social network hasn’t followed the rules of the software license.

Indeed, it was found out that the social network has broken the free and open-source software licensing agreement by ripping off decentralized social network Mastodon. Hence, the Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG) has a month to agree to the terms of the licenses before its access is terminated.

TMTG’s only product is the social network Truth Social that seemed to be based on Mastodon. Even though anyone can use its code, they still need to comply with the Affero General Public License (or AGPLv3) that governs the code, which Truth Social doesn’t do. Moreover, the network says its services are proprietary by removing references and connections to Mastodon, except in the site’s underlying HTML.

The SFC declared that the Trump Media and Technology Group ignored the rules that enforce free and open-source software licenses for everyone. Thus, it requires that TMTG allow all users access to the Truth Social source code, or their rights and permissions in the software will be automatically and permanently terminated. It could even sue the group for violating the terms of the license it used.
