Play Protect, Android’s new security system, came last in testing with Google’s cyber security software and 24 competitors by Germany’s AV-Test, an antivirus testing lab.

Play Protect detected 65.8% of new malware samples and 79.2% of month-old software in September 2017, which counted for last place, compared to Trend Micro who won with a 100% mark.

The industry average was 95.7% detection on new malware and 98.4% detection on month-old malware.

The Android security apps that finished with the best results in AV-Test’s rankings included: Trend Micro, Tencent, Sophos, PSafe DFNDR, Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, G Data, Cheetah Mobile, Bitdefender, Avast, Antiy and AhnLab.

Director of Android Security, Adrian Ludwig, said to cyberscoop: “Since the beginning of the year, the number of devices affected by user-installed malware across the ecosystem went from about 0.63%, which is well under 1% where it was tracking steadily for years, to about 0.25%. So we basically cut that in half.”
