Chinese self-driving cars recalled due to software error

The Chinese driverless car company Pony.ai has recently had to recall some versions of its AI software from US roads due to errors in the product.

Indeed, the self-driving company has permits to conduct on-road tests of its self-driving tech in California and China and has also operated the US’s first robot-taxi service. However, one of its took out some street signs in October 2021, which led to California’s Department of Motor Vehicles withdrawing the company’s permit to operate robot-cars in December. As a result, trials ceased.

Moreover, the company has been contacted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for a recall of certain versions of its software as it is suspected to be unsafe. This will complicate the business’s aim to sell its recent self-driving module.

Although self-driving cars are still experiencing problems, the interest remains significant.
