Ensuring ship operators can take pragmatic steps to increase cyber security risks on-board, Inmarsat, a global satellite network, is launching a unified threat management (UTM) ‘virtual machine’ solution.
At the end of the year the solution will be installed within existing hardware on-board, to provide protection and data inspection by analysing traffic flows through the on-board controller.
“If a server or client is compromised, it can be isolated automatically and keep the rest of the network clean,” explained Peter Broadhurst, Senior Vice President at Inmarsat.
“It’s not just a ‘take off the shelf’ production used in a sector such as finance; instead we have made it more specific to the maritime industry, tailoring it to how marine data traffic works,” he added.
