New AI tool was developed to predict diabetes

Researchers from the Queen Mary University of London have recently developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool that can identify patients who are at risk of becoming diabetic.

Indeed, the AI tool is able to automatically measure the amount of fat around the heart by using MRI scan images. It was proven that a larger amount of fat around the heart could lead to diabetes, no matter the person’s age, sex, and body mass index. However, measuring it is challenging and time-consuming.

With the AI tool, the MRI scans are able to detect the amount of fat around the heart rather quickly and automatically. It was reported that the tool will also be used to learn more about the correlations between the fat around the heart and disease risk, as well as become a part of patients’ standard care in hospitals.

The tool was tested on more than 45.000 people and it was found out that it could accurately calculate a patient’s risk of diabetes. In the future, it could also be used to improve patient care.
