Scottish hospital trials IoT to monitor NHS beds

NHS Highland’s Caithness General Hospital is trialling IoT technology to monitor medical beds.

Ensuring patients are comfortable is essential, so it’s important that medical beds have regular maintenance checks so they’re fit-for-purpose.

This has led the hospital in Scotland, Wick, to trial IoT sensors which automate bed maintenance, monitors the beds as they move around the building, as well as studies the medical state of beds to improve maintenance data.

Beringar and the Scottish Innovation Center for Sensor and Imaging Systems developed the sensors which are being trialled by using Bluetooth-compatible tags that transfer real-time data from the beds via a low-power, wide area network.

The data which includes records of the location and maintenance of the 69 hospital beds will also be accessed through a central dashboard.
