Software updates sent to electronic warfare system mid-flight

The U.S. Air Force was able to send software updates to its electronic warfare (EW) system in mid-flight.

Indeed, it was reported by officials that the EW system on an F-16C jet fighter received software updates while in flight. This successful test leads the way towards more expansive capability including cognitive electronic warfare. These new functionalities will be using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in order to improve EW capabilities.

Besides, the test also aims to enhance networking, remote targeting, advanced communications packages, low-cost unmanned systems, and distributed networks of sensors.

The EW mid-flight software update test was achievable with the help of the Software Integration Laboratory at Hill Air Force Base in Utah.
