Starbucks software glitch

Some US and Canadian Starbucks stores were only accepting cash on Tuesday, forcing them to give away free coffee to customers paying by card, because of a software update glitch that caused the stores to go offline.

Starbucks spokeswoman, Madeleine Löwenborg-Frick, blamed the glitch on an overnight software update and believes that it wasn’t related to the ransom attack “WannaCry,” that infected more than 300,000 computers worldwide.

“Our systems have not been compromised by any third party,” she said in an email on Tuesday. “We hope to have all stores back online shortly.”

The company did not specify how many stores were affected.
