Uber engineering hub to open in Toronto

As part of $200 million investment, the San Francisco-based tech company has announced its plans to launch an ‘Uber engineering hub’ in Toronto, with the proposed location being a high rise on Bloor Street East.

The facility, Uber’s eleventh engineering hub worldwide, but its first in Canada, will occupy five floors of a building at 121 Bloor Street East, near Church Street. Uber have said this is part of a five-year $200 million investment aimed to help develop Toronto’s tech ecosystem.

A spokesperson for Uber said the facility will focus its efforts on “developing the Uber Grocery business, product offerings and go-to-market strategy”.

Uber’s staff there will also “leverage artificial intelligence and big data to create tools that analyze risk and generate intelligence that will help Uber make smart investment decisions. Uber is creating hundreds of local jobs with a mandate to attract international talent to the local tech economy and offer new opportunities for Canadian graduates to find employment at home”.

Over 200 staff will relocate to the office and it will eventually grow to accommodate more than 400 employees. The Toronto Star also reported that Uber will be vacating three offices in the city in order to relocate employees to the new building space.
