1.4 million phishing sites are created monthly, says report

The Webroot Quarterly Threat Trends Report found nearly 1.4 million new phishing sites are created each month.

Phishing attacks are the cause of breaches worldwide, with an average of 46,000 new sites created each day.

The report found, in May, the figure reached a high of 2.3 million sites created.

According to a recent Bitglass survey, 59% of hackers said that phishing was the best way to steal people’s information.

Phishing scams cost American businesses US$500 million per year, according to an FBI Public Service announcement, from May 2017.

Hal Lonas, CTO of Webroot, said in a press release: “Even savvy cyber security professionals can fall prey.

“Instead of blaming the victim, the industry needs to embrace a combination of user education and organisational protection with real-time intelligence to stay ahead of the ever-changing threat landscape.”

Verizon also found phishing was found to be the cause of 90% of breaches and security incidents.
