Facebook agrees licensing deal with Universal Music Group

Facebook has reached a multi-year licensing agreement with the Universal Music Group (UMG), allowing users to share and post music on the social media site.

UMG addresses copyright issues raised by unauthorised use of its artists’ material while representing artists such as Taylor Swift and Jay-Z.

The company recently insisted Facebook remove posts which include covers of its artists’ songs.

Universal Music Group’s executive vice president of digital strategy, Michael Nash, said to the BBC: “Together, Facebook and UMG are creating a dynamic new model for collaboration between music companies and social platforms to advance the interests of recording artists and songwriters while enhancing the social experience of music for their fans.”

UMG’s licensing¬†deal also covers Instagram and Oculus.
