WhatsApp suffers universal power outage

WhatsApp, a popular messaging service owned by Facebook Inc., suffered a universal power outage for several hours last Wednesday.

According to Reuters journalists, the social networking system affected consumers who use Apple Inc.’s iOs, Alphabet Inc.’s Android and Microsoft Corp’s Windows OS programmes in the United States, Brazil, India and Canada.

Facebook bought WhatsApp in 2014 for US$19 billion, since then 1.2 billion people use it as a key communication tool.

A rival system Telegram picked up millions of Brazilian customers after the technical fault.

“Earlier today, WhatsApp users in all parts of the world were unable to access WhatsApp for a few hours,” WhatsApp said in an email late Wednesday afternoon.

“We have now fixed the issue and apologise for the inconvenience.”
