Researchers to develop software for identifying health problems in newborns

Australian researchers have recently developed new software that can potentially identify serious health problems in vulnerable babies and infants.

Indeed, the software, created by researchers from Monash University, can be used with digital stethoscopes so as to gain advanced screening of hearts and lungs. By doing so, they are able to get a more accurate diagnosis of cardio-respiratory complications. Health providers have then a better sound clarity when doing their diagnosis and have a much better resolution to interpret, assess, and monitor newborn illness.

Moreover, the software can be used either in hospitals or by parents at home. This is particularly good for developing countries or remote regions that have to deal with limited health resources. Parents only have to place the digital stethoscope to a newborn’s chest and collect sound, the software will guide them to the right location if needed.

The software is set to be trialed in conjunction with new digital stethoscope hardware and should be available by the middle of this year.
